Growing up my parents invested in sets of Encyclopaedias for us. One set I used throughout junior and middle school was Britannica. It’s long gone now.
My mother had a set of Illustrated World Encyclopaedias published by Bobley in 1967 which I just discovered again today packed in a box. Unfortunately they come with a very sad tale.
Not once but on 3 separate occasions I have been robbed. The third, a more recent one, was during a big move from one house to another about 4 years ago. We at first put our stuff into a big outdoor self locking storage while we went on vacation for a month. Once we began unpacking our boxes we noticed that the items inside looked like they had been tossed into the boxes instead of neatly packed. The two moving companies and the storage place claimed to know nothing about it. I was shocked as I packed every single box myself. Lots of stuff was missing too. Stuff like the other half of the set of Illustrated World Encyclopaedias my mother had. Why they just took the last half of the set is beyond me.
I have Volumes 1 to 13 ( A to Man). And from what I researched, not much on it really, they were worth around $9.00 a book awhile back, that’s around $117.00 for what I have. The bindings are nearest mint as are the pages. I don’t think anyone has read them. I know we were not allowed to.
If someone out there has the rest of the set or wants what I have, pay up or give the rest of them back so I can sell them ![]()
(Like that’s gonna happen, NOT!)
That’s like wishing the thief would return my stamp and scrapbook collections too.
I also have a set of The Book of Popular Science from The Grolier Society Inc. 1957, Volumes 1 to 10. The cover on Volume 1 has a picture of a bomb blast, like an A-Bomb. They are not in mint condition but good condition. I found someone spilled something in Volume 1. Mint are around 9 bucks so these would go for around 5 to 7 bucks, so that’s another $50 to 70.00 sitting in a box
